About the Encyclopedia

The world wide web has always been used as a source of medical and health information by millions of people around the world. A  recent study undertaken in Saudi Arabia by post-graduate students showed that there were only a few Arabic health websites with outstanding quality (Huziah M, Kahtany M, Ammari R, Faiz R. Assessment of Online Health Information for Arabic Sites. King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences; 2009). Thus, Arab internet users will not always be able to find reliable and trustworthy Arabic health information, and they may easily become victims of misleading and false information spread in different forums and social media pages.

The deficiency of credible Arabic health information on the web called for an immediate action to improve the quality of Arabic health information on the web. King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in collaboration with the Saudi Association for Health informatics (SAHI) initiated KAAHE project in May 2010. Consequently, the National Guard Health Affairs (NGHA), in collaboration with the Health On the Net Foundation (HON) and World Health Organization (WHO), developed King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Arabic Health Encyclopedia website.

The project was presented to King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the King of Saudi Arabia who is well known for his support to humanitarian projects. The project was approved officially and announced during the Saudi E-health conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on May 2010. A project team was formed headed by the VP for Technology and Health Informatics at KSAU-HS University. KAAHE was first launched during the Saudi E-Health conference, held in Riyadh 11th March 2012.
